Project Description
Fan Man Yi Collection
Description:
Design freshmasonry Fan Man Yi has developed a great sense of belonging to the iconic sweet delicacies of Hong Kong, going so far as to create her graduation project based on the topic. Her graphic design is based on the four fruits that are popular ingredients used in Hong Kong desserts, including mango, banana, watermelon and the infamous durian. In her work, she has stripped the fruits down to the bare minimum, leaving each with their iconic silhouettes and distinct colours. To cater her young target audience, Man Yi chose to present the fruits in a zoomorphic way, adding legs and eyes, with them holding spoons to add to their quirky presentation. To further tie in with their significance to Hong Kong culture, she illustrated a few iconic local icons to sit adjacently to the disproportionately large fruit characters, further fixating the image of Hong Kong as a culinary heaven.
Man Yi’s use of contrasting colours, simple geometric shapes are well appreciated in a commercial context due to the ease of replication and striking visual impact. The set of graphic design was then applied to many collaborations that favour pop art elements and cater to a younger audience. Collaborator TML Apparel Limited offered to print Man Yi’s graphic with their easy-to-operate T-shirt creating platform. Their goal is to eliminate the obstacles associated with traditional manufacturing, offering budding local artists and designers an approachable platform to distribute their works.
In her collaboration with Delta Blues Audio, the graphic design was digitally printed on the planar and circular ‘resonance disc’, a distinct feature to the line of speakers that gives its unique, high-fidelity audio signature. The graphic design features the jagged silhouette of the ‘durian’ character, which is synonymous to the image of an exploding speech bubble. Delta Blues Audio’s uniqueness lies in its unique modular construction of its speaker, which allows for its ‘resonance disc’ to be fabricated, customised or decorated using a variety of materials and craftsmanship, reaching a broader market.
The same expressive graphic was applied on ECO Concepts’ ‘EcoCan’ through their state-of-the-art cylindrical printing technology. Taking inspirations from a classic soda can, ECO Concepts’ design takes on a water bottle, aptly named ‘EcoCan’, which is familiar yet surprisingly modern. The material PLA boasts heat resistance up to 120°C, BPA and toxic free and is white in colour in its natural state, making it a fantastic canvas to accept a multitude of printing possibilities. In this case, the subjectivity was changed to a dancing banana, a low GI (and less pungent) choice of fruit for the active lifestyle.
